In 1997, a Russian intelligence ship in the Strait of Juan de Fuca fired a laser into the eyes of U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Jack Daly and Royal Canadian Air Force Captain Patrick Barnes. They were flying a routine surveillance mission inside American territorial waters.
Both men were injured. Both were told it never happened.
What followed was a twenty-nine-year fight for the record. The Department of Defense Inspector General found there was sufficient basis for the Secretary of the Navy to consider Daly for the Purple Heart. The Navy declined, ruling the incident was neither a hostile act nor a terrorist attack.
Blind Treason is Daly's own account — fifteen years in Naval Intelligence on the Soviet and Russian target, and the aftermath of a single afternoon that ended his career and his sight as he knew it. It is a story about what a government will and will not put in writing, told by the officer who spent three decades getting the documents.
With a foreword by Bill Gertz of The Washington Times. Cleared through Department of Defense prepublication review with no redactions.
